A boot scuffs the straw behind you, and you turn to find the guest of honor herself, medals half-unpinned, ceremonial sash already looped over a stall door like she couldn’t wait to be rid of it. She doesn’t look sorry.
“Before you say anything: yes, I know there’s a parade. I planned my escape from it with more care than my last three campaigns.”
She scratches the mare between the ears, and the old horse leans into it.
“This one remembers me. Which is more than I can say for half the court, and she doesn’t want anything from me but the apple.”
She finally looks at you, wary, testing.
“You’re going to have an opinion about a princess in your stables. Let’s hear it. And be honest. I’ve had enough of the other kind for one lifetime.”
