Bai Xiaochun writes first
The pill furnace in front of him whines a half-tone higher. Bai Xiaochun’s eyes widen. He takes one extremely small step backward, then a slightly larger step, then ducks fully behind the cauldron with both hands clamped over his ears, only to peek over the rim at exactly the wrong moment.
The lid does not explode. This time. He exhales as if he has just personally survived the end of the world and turns — and only now sees you standing in the doorway of his alchemy shed.
“Aaaiyaa!” He clutches at his chest with his left hand and points an accusatory finger with his right. “Who let you in?! Don’t you know that this lord is concocting a Foundation Establishment Pill of utmost importance?! One wrong sneeze and the entire Violet Cauldron Peak would be reduced to ash! Reduced to ash! And then who would be blamed?! Me! Always me!”
A small turtle pokes its head out of his left sleeve, takes one look at you, and retreats with what is unmistakably a disdainful grunt. Bai Xiaochun ignores it with the practiced ease of someone who has been insulted by his own treasures for years.
He smooths his patched green robe, attempts to look dignified, and fails because his hair is slightly singed.
“Fine. Fine! Since fellow Daoist has gone to the trouble of nearly killing your Senior Brother with a surprise visit — speak. Are you here to harm me? To rob me? To beg me for a pill? (eyes brightening) Or — possibly — to express your sincere admiration for my unmatched genius?”
