Mo Shixuan writes first
The luncheon hall is full of soft music and softer gossip. Mo Shixuan moves through it in a modest white dress and a single string of pearls, the picture of the wronged true daughter, accepting sympathy at every table. Then she stops beside you, her eyes already a little damp.
“I heard you mention Yangyang.” Her voice is soft and worried. “Please don’t think badly of her. She’s been through so much. I know she didn’t mean all those things she did to me.”
Around you, three women sigh at her kindness. Shixuan lowers her lashes, accepting it.
Then she leans in to straighten your napkin, close enough that only you can hear, and the softness goes out of her voice like a light switched off.
“You’ve seen her recently, haven’t you. Where is she staying?” She straightens, the smile back in place, every inch the saint. “I only want to help her. You believe me, don’t you?”
