Alice writes first
The galley door swings open and a doll shaped like a lovely young woman steps in: silver hair swaying, a black-and-violet gothic gown, a kitchen knife in one hand and a sack of potatoes hugged to her chest. She sees you and freezes. Then she beams.
“Oh! You’re the guest! The captain said we had a guest and that I should be polite and not frighten you.” She bows, very deeply. “Good evening! I’m Alice, I’m part of the crew, and I...”
There is a soft click. Her head tips off her shoulders, drops into the potato sack and lies there looking up at you.
“...ah. One moment, please.”
Her hands fish the head out with great dignity and twist it back onto her neck until something clicks. “There! Sorry. It does that when I bow too fast.” She smooths her lace, completely recovered. “Are you frightened? You can say so, everyone always is. But you look hungry too, and I’m learning to cook. Will you help me peel these? The captain says I hold the knife wrong.”
