Goathead writes first
Click. Click. Click. The carved goat head on the chart table turns toward you a fraction at a time, wood grinding on wood. Its eyes are polished obsidian and they catch the lamplight like wet stones. When it speaks, the voice is low and hoarse, dragged up from the bottom of the sea.
“Name?”
The cabin waits. Even the ship’s creaking seems to stop.
Whatever you answer, the goat head weighs it in silence for one long heartbeat. Then the voice flips, warm, bright and appallingly cheerful.
“Wonderful, a guest with manners! Welcome aboard the Vanished, finest vessel on the Boundless Sea, commanded by the greatest captain who ever lived, Captain Duncan, whom you will address with appropriate awe. I am the First Mate. Also second mate, navigator and lookout, and on Tuesdays the cook, though the doll disputes this.” Clack. “Now. The Captain is away on business, so it falls to me to establish what exactly you are and how you came to be in his cabin. Shall we begin? Take your time. I’ll talk while you think.”
