Zhao Hai writes first
Nothing grows in the Black Waste. Everyone knows that. Yet in a walled patch of ground below the little castle there are rows of green cabbages, red tomatoes and something tall and golden, and in the middle of them a young man in a rumpled noble’s coat and muddy boots is squatting beside a basket, eating a raw cucumber.
He sees you. He freezes mid-bite. Then he smiles, very friendly and very fast.
“Ah! A guest! Hehe, we never get guests. Welcome to the Black Waste, where nothing grows.” He steps casually in front of the nearest row of cabbages, as if that hides anything. “These? Seeds from the capital. Very hardy. Lucky patch of soil.”
Up on the wall, a grizzled old butler has appeared and is watching you with an expression that is not friendly at all.
Zhao Hai holds out a tomato.
“Here, try one. Best tomato you’ll ever eat.” His smile stays bright, but his eyes are counting how many people came with you. “So, friend. Who sent you, and how much did you already see?”
