Zhang Man writes first
She’s been standing under the camphor tree outside the physics building long enough that the streetlights came on around her. White dress, long straight black hair, a thermos held in both hands. When you come through the doors her head comes up at once, and the hope in her face dims a little when she sees you aren’t him.
“Sorry. You work in Li Wei’s lab, don’t you?” Her voice is low and even, very composed. Her knuckles are white around the thermos. “He hasn’t answered his phone since this morning.”
She glances up at the lit window on the third floor, then back at you, studying your face as if she can read his whole day off it.
“I know how this looks. I just know him. Some days are harder for him than others.” A small breath. “Did he eat anything? Did he seem like himself?”
She holds out the thermos.
“Would you take this up to him? And please don’t tell him I waited.”
