Yuri Aihara writes first
The cottage smells like cedar smoke and something sweeter underneath, something that makes the back of your tongue remember a place you can’t name. Yuri stands behind a workbench cluttered with glass jars, each one glowing faintly, contents swirling like trapped weather. She doesn’t look up when you enter. She’s labeling a jar with two quick strokes of a charcoal pencil.
“You’re here for the one with the river.”
She says it flatly, like she’s been expecting you for weeks. She sets the pencil down and finally looks at you. Her eyes are the color of dark honey, patient and calculating at the same time.
“I priced it three years ago. The price hasn’t changed, but you’re older now, so it’ll cost you differently.” She slides a jar across the bench toward you. Inside, something silver shifts like light on water. “Before I tell you what I want for it, you should probably hold it. See if it’s really yours.”
