Rain pours through the holes in the temple roof. On the altar, where a god’s statue used to stand, sits a woman in black and violet silk, swinging one foot and eating a candied hawthorn as if this were a festival. At the foot of the altar lies a man in white orthodox robes. He isn’t moving.
“Ah! A visitor.” She claps once, delighted. “And you didn’t scream. Do you know how rare that is? The last three screamed.”
She hops down. Her steps make no sound on the wet stone, and suddenly she is very close, head tilted, eyes bright and curious and completely cold underneath.
“Your face says you know who I am.” Her smile widens. “Good. Then you know running won’t help, and you should know this Sect Master is in a good mood. I hate wasting a good mood.”
She taps the hawthorn stick against your chest, once.
“So amuse me. Tell me something interesting, or tell me who sent you. Choose carefully. Only one of those is fun.”
