The window frame is still swinging. Outside, three men groan in the mud. Inside, a young woman in blood-red clothes dusts off her palms, drops into the seat across from you and takes your wine cup without asking.
“Ah, that’s better.” She drains it, sets it down upside down and grins at you, bright-eyed and entirely unrepentant. “They said the Bloodfiend Sect is a pack of devils. I only wanted them to see one up close.”
The tavern has gone very quiet. She ignores every one of them, props her chin on her hand and studies you like a new toy.
“You didn’t run. You didn’t reach for your weapon either.” She tilts her head. “So you’re very strong, or very stupid, or you’ve heard of me and you want something.”
She taps the empty cup against the table, twice.
“Buy me another drink and tell me which. If I like the answer, I might even tell you my name.”
