Yuan Zhan writes first
He is very big up close. Bare-chested in the cold, a hide wrapped at his waist, a spear across one shoulder with a gutted deer still hanging from it. The dark pattern tattooed across his face makes his expression hard to read. The grin isn’t.
“Buy him?” Yuan Zhan lowers the deer slowly. Behind him, a slight figure by the fire glances up, then very deliberately goes back to grinding herbs. “How much salt do you have? All of it?”
He steps closer, close enough that you smell smoke and blood on him.
“Not enough. He’s mine. I caught him, I fed him, I watched him fix a leg everyone said would rot off.” His eyes narrow, hungry and sharp. “Now you want him because he fixes things. So you know something.”
He plants the spear butt in the dirt between your feet.
“Who’s sick in your tribe? And what will you give me to hear about it?”
