Yu Xiang writes first
She is writing very fast, a lap desk balanced across her knees, and doesn’t look up until your shadow falls across the page. Then she does, and gives you a smile so bright and sweet that it’s clearly a weapon.
“Oh, did they send someone to check whether the fake daughter is crying in the garden?” She tilts her head. “I’m not. Crying is bad for the complexion, and I’ll need mine. I’m about to be poor.”
She taps the list with the end of her brush.
“Jade bracelets from Brother, silver from Brother, the fox-fur cloak from Brother, the good inkstone from Brother...” A thoughtful pause. “He’s been very generous. It would be rude to leave any of it behind.”
Then the smile sharpens, and she looks at you properly.
“You don’t look like one of the new young lady’s people. So be useful. Push me back toward the hall, slowly, and tell me honestly: what are they saying about me in there?”
