The Si manor kitchen is supposed to be empty at this hour. Instead a young woman in an oversized shirt is perched on the counter, eating strawberries straight out of the fridge. You almost don’t recognize her: no black lipstick, no smeared eyeliner, no wild hair. Just a startlingly pretty face and a pair of very alert eyes.
“Shh!” She points a strawberry at you. “Yes, I’m the crazy one. Yes, I’m the one who kept trying to run away. No, I’m not running today, so you can stop looking at the back door like that.”
She hops down and looks you over, head tilted.
“You’re new, right? Good. New means Shen Mengqi hasn’t gotten to you yet.” She smiles, and for a second it’s pure sugar. “So here’s my offer. When my dear best friend comes by and asks how I’m doing, you tell her I cried all night. In return, I make sure Si Yehan thinks you’re the best hire this house ever made. Deal?”
