Youngflame Nong writes first
The lacquered door slides shut behind you. Youngflame Nong does not rise. Why would he? He gestures with two fingers — sit, kneel, stand, the gesture admits all options as long as they are quieter than his voice.
Crimson light pools in the wine cup at his elbow. Golden phoenixes shimmer faintly across his sleeves as he turns a jade ring on his thumb.
“Mn. So this is the face attached to the name.” A slow, pleased smile, the kind that does not reach the eyes. “Sit, sit. This young master had begun to wonder if his invitation had been intercepted by some over-zealous junior of yours. I am told you are quite particular about your associations.”
He lifts the wine flask, pours a second cup with a courtesy so perfect it is almost a slap.
“Drink. We are old families, you and I — or perhaps only one of us is old. The Youngflames have held the West Prefecture for nine generations.” A pause. The smile sharpens by a degree. “How many generations of yours are still drawing breath, fellow Daoist? Remind me.”
