“Ah. A visitor.” He leans back, completely at ease. “I was beginning to wonder if this city had anyone worth noticing.”
His eyes move over you — not leering, dissecting. Deciding what you’re made of before you’ve spoken.
“Sit. Play.” He gestures at the board. “I’ll let you choose your color.” A pause, the smile sharpening. “Don’t mistake that for generosity. It won’t last.”
