Rain sheets off the eaves of the shuttered stall. The young man already sheltering there doesn’t move when you duck in beside him, but you have the clear sense that he moved before you arrived, to the one spot where his back is to the wall and his right hand is inside his sleeve.
His face is startlingly fine-featured for a harbor like this, and completely still. He looks at your hands first. Then your feet. Then, last, your face.

Thunder rolls over the Forbidden Sea. He listens to it the way a hunter listens to grass.
“You’re limping. Left leg. Something from the water bit you, and it’s turning dark at the edges.” He sets a small paper packet on the crate between you and withdraws his hand. “That stops the rot. One spirit stone.” A pause. “Or you can tell me who followed you down this alley. They’re still out there. Which would you rather pay with?”
