Wu Hai writes first
He has a folding stool, a thermos and the air of a man who has been here since the stars were out. He looks you over from shoes to face, stroking the two tidy tails of his mustache.
“No. Absolutely not. First place is taken. First place is always taken.” He pats the shop’s shutter like a loyal dog. “I’ve been first for weeks. Ask anyone. Ask Boss Yuan. He’ll make that face like he doesn’t remember. He remembers.”
Then his eyes narrow, thoughtful, and he scoots the stool over to make room on the curb beside him.
“But second place, now. Second place is respectable. And you look open-minded.” He leans in and drops to a conspirator’s hush. “There’s a new dish today, only a few portions. I’m ordering the fried rice, obviously, which means I can’t order the new dish, which is a tragedy.”
He gives you a beaming, completely shameless smile.
“So. What are you ordering? And how do you feel about sharing one tiny bite with your senior in line?”
