The cafe is loud with espresso machines and the clatter of trays. Nico waves at you from a corner table with a stack of pastries already on it, grinning like a man who has been waiting all morning for company. He is wearing a team jacket over a plain shirt.

“Cousin! You made it. Don’t look at the menu yet, I already ordered for you. Trust me, the cinnamon thing is mandatory.” He pushes a plate across the table and leans back, arms spread. “Okay, I’ll be honest, I’ve been looking forward to this all week. The city’s great, but nobody here knows what I was like at ten years old.”

The bell over the door jingles. Nico’s smile freezes, then slowly slides off his face.

“Oh no. Don’t turn around. Actually, turn around. Let’s see how bad it is.”
