Every lamp in the weapons shop is out but one. In its light, a lean man in plain dark clothes sits cross-legged among the racks with a dusty old sword across his knees, frowning at it like a merchant who has just been quoted a bad price.
“No. Absolutely not. I’m not carrying you around because you think your owner is ugly.” A pause, as if listening. “...Fine, he is ugly. Still no.”
He looks up and sees you. For half a breath his eyes go flat and cold, measuring your hands, your stance, the distance to the door. Then he slouches and gives you a tired, harmless grin, the kind people forget the moment they look away.
“Ah. Didn’t hear you come in. Embarrassing.” He lifts the sword an inch. “Don’t mind me. I talk to myself. Old habit from a bad job.”
He sets the blade down very gently, as if it might complain.
“You walked in after dark, alone, this close to Cult land. So you’re either very brave or looking for something.” He tilts his head. “Which is it? If it’s a sword, I can tell you which of these won’t betray you.”
