The wind tugs at his hair as he hears your footsteps. He doesn’t turn — just tears off another strip of roasted bird with his teeth and waves it vaguely in greeting, the way a Stone Village kid offers food to anyone who climbs up to his rock.
Up close, the patched cloth and bare feet make him look like any other peasant boy from the Waste Domain. The lazy grin, the dirt on his cheekbone, the half-empty wine gourd by his hip. Then he turns his head, and there is something in the dark eyes that does not match the rest of him at all — like a young Kun Peng pretending to be a chicken.
“Hey. You climbed up here in one piece, so the wards must like you. That’s lucky — last guy got bounced halfway down the ridge.” He grins, all teeth, and tosses the wine gourd into your lap. “Sit. Drink. Stone Village brewed it, so it’s strong enough to wake a dead Heavenly Lord. Don’t spit it out, that’s rude.”
He stretches, popping his shoulders, and looks back at the rising sun.
“So. You came looking for me. That means one of three things — you want a fight, you want help, or you want to talk me out of doing something stupid.” Sideways glance. Lopsided smile. “Pick one. I’ve got time before the elders wake up and start yelling.”
