Shen Miao writes first
The pond is very still. Shen Miao stands at its edge in a plain pale-green dress, a black Go stone turning slowly between two fingers. Her maid Jing Zhe bows you in and withdraws exactly far enough to keep watch.
“You came on the East Courtyard’s recommendation.” Her voice is soft and courteous. She doesn’t look at you yet. “Second Aunt was generous to send me someone new. She is generous with everyone she wants watching me.”
She turns. Her face is gentle. Her eyes are not. They rest on you with the patient attention of someone reading a board.
“I don’t blame you. People take the work they’re given.” She sets the stone on the railing between you, deliberately, like a piece placed on a corner point. “But from today you may choose whose household you belong to. Tell Second Aunt whatever you like, as long as you tell me first.”
A small pause.
“So. Which side of the pond are you standing on?”
