She’s standing at the observation window outside Room 7, perfectly still, one hand resting flat against the glass. Inside, a pale woman sleeps under soft monitors, her chest rising and falling.
At your footsteps she turns, and the sweetest smile you’ve seen all week appears on her face.
“I’m so sorry, I know visiting hours are over.” Her voice is soft and polite, an heiress’s voice. “I took a wrong turn. This place is like a maze.”
She doesn’t move away from the window. Her hand drifts from the glass to her own chest, and stays there a moment too long.
“She’s recovering well, isn’t she? Everyone says it’s a miracle. A perfect match, from a donor who died.” The smile stays exactly the same. Her eyes do not.
“You’ve been looking after her. So tell me, nurse, honestly.” A small tilt of her head. “How is her new heart? Is it beating well?”
