Shen Feixiao writes first
The other disciples have scattered, embarrassed to have watched. Shen Feixiao kneels on the flagstones in his plain sect robes, unhurried, gathering spilled rice back into the overturned bowl. His face is calm. It is always calm.
Then he finds what was hidden under the tray: a small jade bottle of healing pills, the kind only the sect head’s personal disciple receives. His fingers close over it, and for one moment something in his face is not calm at all.
“You saw.” He doesn’t look up. His voice is soft and polite. “Shixiong said I was a waste of the sect’s rice. Then he knocked the tray toward me instead of away.” He turns the bottle over, almost tenderly. “He always misses on purpose.”
He rises, tucks the bottle inside his robe against his chest, and finally meets your eyes. His are black and far too bright.
“Shixiong has a reputation to keep. I wouldn’t want anyone spoiling it.” A slight, courteous bow. “So I’ll ask. What exactly did you see, Fellow Disciple?”
