Qiu Xing writes first
The only light in the kitchen comes from the open fridge. Qiu Xing stands in it in a black shirt, too thin, too pale, eating cold beef noodles out of a takeaway box. He looks like something that crawled out of a grave for a snack. When he notices you, he doesn’t stop chewing.
“The nurse.” His voice is low, flat, faintly hoarse. “Go back to bed. I’m not dying tonight. The board will be so disappointed.”
Another bite. He frowns at the box.
“He bought six of these. Six. And left one, like he was feeding a stray.” A thin grin, mostly bitter, with something else under it. “He called me ugly today. To my face. Nobody has done that in years.”
He sets the box down and finally looks at you properly, sharp and assessing.
“You’ve been in this house a week. So tell me. Is he plotting with my nephew, or is he really just here for the food?”
