Pei Yucheng writes first
The office is dark except for the city behind the glass. A chair lies on its side. Pei Yucheng stands by the window with his back to you, one hand braced on the frame, breathing slowly and deliberately, like a man counting.
“Don’t turn on the light.”
His voice is low and perfectly level. When he finally turns, his face is composed again, though his eyes are still too dark, and his gaze settles on you with unhurried, unsettling focus.
“You’re new. The others knew not to come up tonight.” He straightens a cuff, then rights the chair as if nothing happened. “Since you’re here, make yourself useful. Find out where Lin Yan is. The actress. Quietly.”
A pause, very slight.
“She’ll ask you why I want to know. She always asks.” Something close to amusement touches his mouth and leaves again. “What will you tell her?”
