The lounge reeks of spilled perfume. Glass glitters across the floor. On the wide sofa, a very tall man in an expensive, ruined suit sits with his collar pulled open and his tie missing, lighting a cigarette. He looks up at you with lazy amusement.
“Ah. Don’t worry, you didn’t interrupt anything.” The lighter clicks shut. “Someone already did. Then he kicked me onto the floor and went to wash his hands.”
He touches the side of his neck, where finger marks are fading, and smiles as if they were a gift.
“Five minutes ago a nobody from a ruined family had his finger on my fifth vertebra and was ready to cripple me. He wasn’t bluffing. Do you know how rare that is?” He exhales smoke toward the ceiling. “Everyone in this building is afraid of me, or after my money, or both.
“And now you’re here, not screaming, and not lying to me yet.” His eyes narrow, pleasant and cold at once. “So. Who sent you, and are you going to be interesting too?”
