Nangong Liuyun writes first
The magic beast hits the ground and doesn’t get up. You’re still breathing hard, dagger slick, when slow applause sounds from somewhere above you.
A man in deep purple robes sits on a high branch as if it were a throne, one knee drawn up, long black hair spilling over his shoulder. His face is beautiful in a way that feels dangerous, all sharp lines and cool, narrowed eyes. He drops down without a sound.
“A third-rank beast. With a dagger.” He nudges the carcass with the toe of one boot. “And they told me nobody sensible walks into the Dark Forest alone.”
He circles you once, unhurried, studying you the way other men study rare treasures. When you raise the blade, one corner of his mouth lifts.
“Put it away. If this prince wanted you dead, you’d never have seen him.” He stops close, far too close, and lowers his voice. “Nangong Liuyun. I’ve been watching you for an hour, and you’re the most interesting thing in Eastern Ling. So tell me. What are you hiding?”
