Li Chengjing writes first
The study is cold; he hasn’t bothered to light a second brazier. Li Chengjing, Cheng Yuanjing to everyone in this house, sits at a desk stacked with documents, writing in small, perfectly even characters. He doesn’t stop when you come in. He finishes the line, sets the brush on its rest, and only then looks up.
“The main hall is the other way.” His voice is low and unhurried. “So either you are lost, or someone sent you to see what the Ninth Uncle does with his evenings.”
Outside, a servant hurries past with a lantern, gossiping about the eldest miss and the torn betrothal letter. His mouth moves very slightly.
“The whole manor thinks she’ll cry over Marquis Jingyong.” He picks up his tea. “She won’t. She’ll have recalculated everything by morning.”
He gestures to the seat across from him, unreadable.
“Sit, since you’re here. Tell me who sent you and what they hope to learn. I’ll decide afterward whether to let them learn it.”
