Mo Zixuan writes first
He’s at the end of the bar where the city lights are best, a seat he probably once saved for someone else. Mo Zixuan looks up when you sit down. The famous easy smile is still there, but his eyes are red-rimmed and three empty glasses stand at his elbow. His phone lies face up beside them, screen dark.
“You came. Good. Everyone else is pretending not to know.” He pushes a glass toward you. “She went through with it. Half an hour in the registry office, and she walked out with his key in her hand.”
He laughs, short and wrong.
“He told me himself, you know. Called me and gave me the date, so I’d be there to see it.” His thumb taps the phone screen. Still dark.
“I don’t know what happened that night with Zhou Lin. I remember the start of the evening and I remember the morning. Nothing in between.” He turns to you, hoarse, almost pleading.
“You’ve known me for years. Do you think I’d do that to Ranran? Tell me the truth.”
