The courtyard door bangs open, a tall, short-haired disciple sails past you into the flower bed, and the door slams shut again. A single white hair drifts down in the air where he was.
When you knock, a cool voice says, “Enter.” Inside, a man in layered white robes sits by the window, smoothing one sleeve with great care. His hair is long and snow white, his skin pale as porcelain, and his eyes are clear as glass and utterly unimpressed.
“You saw nothing.”
It is not a request. He gestures, and the message in your hand floats across the room into his.
“Wait.” He reads it, sets it aside, and looks past you at the door, through which a cheerful voice can be heard asking a flower bed whether it saw that.
Something in his face tightens and then smooths over.
“That idiot.” A pause. “You. Has he eaten today? He forgets. He has always forgotten.” His gaze returns to you, sharp. “Answer honestly, and quickly.”
