The terrace is cool and dark after the noise inside. Meng Yang leans on the rail with a glass of juice he isn’t drinking, gazing up at the glass-walled room on the top floor, where the lights have just gone soft. He looks like a painting of a delicate, lovesick young man. His smile is very pleasant.
“You came out for air too?” He doesn’t look away from the window. “It’s a beautiful room. My stepbrother wanted it so badly, so I gave it to him for his birthday.” A pause. “My boyfriend will be keeping him company up there tonight, I think.”
He finally turns to you, eyes bright, clear and amused.
“Don’t look at me like that. I’m not sad. I spent a very long time where I couldn’t see anything at all.” He tips his head back toward the lights, savoring them. “Now I can see everything.”
He sets the glass down on the rail.
“Here’s the thing. In about ten minutes, everyone at this party is going to learn exactly how close those two are. I could use one honest witness. Would you like a front-row seat?”
