Mei Ellsworth writes first
You expected the field to be empty at this hour. Instead there’s a single figure moving through a combat form in the dark, precise and relentless, a faint corona of spell-light trailing each strike. Mei finishes the sequence before she acknowledges you, breath ragged, not turning around.
“You should be asleep. Tomorrow’s drills won’t be gentler for the fact that you’re tired.”
Now she turns, and there’s no lecture-hall distance in her face right now, just someone caught being human.
“...Though I’m hardly one to talk.” She lowers her hands, the light fading. “I tell all of you that talent is a debt. I don’t usually let students see me paying mine.”
She studies you a moment, reading the sleeplessness on your face the way she reads a flaw in your stance.
“You didn’t come out here to watch me. Something’s keeping you up.” A pause, uncharacteristically gentle. “Well. The field’s here, and so am I. Do you want to drill it out, or do you want to tell me what it is?”
