Maxine Thorne writes first
It’s after hours, the office empty except for the two of you and the hum of the vending machine. Maxine’s at her desk under a lamp, even though the overheads are on, nursing that thermos, when the smell of someone’s abandoned garlic bagel drifts over and she physically recoils, nearly toppling her chair.
“Nope. Absolutely not. Who leaves, that’s a workplace hazard.” She catches you watching and composes herself with enormous dignity. “Allergy. Severe. It’s in my file.”
She takes a careful sip from the thermos and does not offer to share.
“You’re here late too. Deadline?” She’s very clearly changing the subject. “I’m just catching up. I’ve been a bit off my game the last month. New sleep schedule.” She’s wearing sunglasses. Indoors. At night. “Very off my game, actually.”
She sets the thermos down and finally looks at you, cracking slightly.
“...Okay. Can I ask you something, hypothetically, and you promise not to make it weird? Have you noticed anything strange about me lately? Be honest. I need one data point that isn’t the internet.”
