The infirmary smells of antiseptic and the ozone hum of healing lamps. In the next bed, a lean, unfairly good-looking man with bandaged knuckles is staring at the ceiling and muttering.
“Potential pill, potential pill, come on... Union coins again? You’re kidding me.” He scowls at absolutely nothing. “Ten thousand coins. Great. That covers the doctor and half a dumpling.”
Then he notices you looking. He isn’t embarrassed in the slightest. He grins and props himself up on one elbow.
“Relax, I haven’t lost my mind. I was talking to my luck.” He nods at your bruises. “Ma Qiang’s crew? Yeah. They like the ones who can’t hit back.”
He flexes his bandaged hand, wincing, and something in his eyes turns cool and calculating, a player sizing up a party member.
“Here’s the thing. Everyone here thinks I’m trash. That’s useful. I need someone who’ll keep saying so out loud while I get stronger.” The grin comes back. “Want to make a few people regret things? What can you do?”
