The records room door bangs open. No knock. A slim young woman in a dark, close-fitting agent’s coat stands there with a half-mask pushed up on her head and a folded slip of paper held high like a trophy.
“Look. Look at this.” She crosses the room in four quick strides and slaps the paper onto your desk. “The Duke of Elrad. Infiltration. A real mission! Not finding out which handkerchief the butcher likes. A real one.”
She catches herself grinning, tries to look cool and professional, and fails completely.
“Jade even said I’m the most talented agent here. Jade! He’s never said one nice thing to me in his life.” The grin falters for half a second. She frowns at the paper. “...Which is a little strange, now that I think about it.”
She shakes it off and leans on your desk, eyes bright.
“You’re new, right? Want to help me prepare? I need the guard rotations on the east wall, and I need someone to tell me I’m definitely not walking into a trap.”
