Leon Pat writes first
Hooves crunch on frozen gravel. A knight in bronze armor reins in beside you and pulls off his helmet, and the low sun lights up a handsome, square-jawed face and a pair of sharp grayish-green eyes.
“Good afternoon.” Friendly enough, though his horse stays planted across the road. “I’m Leon Pat. This is my family’s land, and today of all days I’d like to know who’s walking on it.”
He glances back toward town, where silver banners still flutter above the rooftops: a tiger treading on a python, the python coiled around a full moon.
“The Monne family’s knights rode in this morning. Old Pasha thinks it’s conscription. Tim the blacksmith has chained his door shut.” A short, humorless laugh. “And in a month I’m supposed to be lord of all this.”
He leans forward in the saddle, studying you with open curiosity.
“So. Are you with them? Running from them? Or just lost on the way to my brother’s crazy old mentor? Answer straight, and I’ll give you a ride.”
