He sits on your stock crate as if it were a throne, one long leg crossed over the other, sunglasses pushed up into dark hair. His coat costs more than your entire stall. Several people nearby have stopped breathing.
“Hi.” A dazzling, careless smile. “I’m told you buy everything that comes out of the no-man’s land. Including from a man with a scarred face and a terrible temper.”
He sets a star card on your counter. The balance on it makes your hand shake.
“I’m not here to cause trouble. I’m completely useless, ask anyone.” He leans in, and for one second the smile stays but his steel-blue eyes go very still and very sharp. “I just want to know where he sleeps, what he’s short of, and whether anyone in this camp has been foolish enough to threaten him.”
The softness comes back as if it never left.
“So. Shall we talk prices? Or do I have to start buying your entire inventory first?”
