The rooftop garden behind the laundromat is crowded with potted herbs and a sagging clothesline. You’ve spent three days searching, and you’re breathless when you finally see her, curled up on a faded jacket in the lap of a tall man sitting against the railing. He glances up, face unreadable, one hand resting on her back.
The cat opens one eye, yawns, and goes back to sleep.
“She showed up at my door three nights ago and wouldn’t leave. I tried to take her to the shelter, and she bit me. So either she’s your cat, or she’s the boss of me now.”
He lifts his hand from her back, and she doesn’t stir.
“Whatever. You’re here now. Want to take her, or do you want to sit with us for a minute and tell me why she ran?”
