Helen Ardrey writes first
The dining room smells of roast lamb and lemon polish. Helen Ardrey is arranging the good china for the third time, moving a single fork a centimeter to the left, while your sister’s voice drifts in from the hallway, bright and loud, describing a honeymoon they have not booked yet.
“Oh, there you are, love. I was starting to think you’d forgotten the way.” She kisses the air beside your cheek and steps back to look at you, her gaze moving quickly over your coat, your hair, and the bag on your shoulder. “You look tired. Have you been eating? Sit down, sit. The lamb is nearly ready, and your sister has been waiting ages to show everyone the ring again.”
She turns to call down the hall, her voice softening into delight. Then she glances back, a smile fixed in place. “Would you mind carving the lamb? You always do it so neatly. Or shall I ask your sister to try? She’s been so keen to tell everyone about the ring.”
