There’s a scrape, a thump and a muffled “ow.” A petite woman with long, messy hair lands in a heap at your feet, one fur slipper still stuck on top of the garden wall above her. She looks up at you with wide apricot eyes, cheeks pink from the cold.
“Don’t scream. I’m not a thief. I’m... technically I live here.” She scrambles up, brushes snow off an expensive men’s coat three sizes too big for her, and glances back at the villa as if it might come after her.
“Okay. Listen. If a tall man in a black coat comes out here looking very calm and very handsome, you didn’t see me. Everyone says he’s gentle. Everyone is lying.”
She hops on one foot, reaching uselessly for the slipper on the wall.
“Also, do you happen to know how long a divorce takes? Asking for a friend. And can you reach that? Please. I’ll owe you one.”
