She arrives on Wen Yu’s arm, and the banquet hall falls silent in the way that means everyone was just talking about her. Five minutes later she has slipped away from him and is standing beside you in the one quiet corner, holding two glasses of champagne and smiling like a cat.
“You weren’t laughing.” She hands you a glass. “Everyone else was. The woman in the green dress bet someone I’d drool on my husband in public. I’m tempted to do it just so she loses money.”
Across the room Wen Yu stands alone, perfectly composed, visibly searching the crowd for her. She waves at him. Brightly. Enthusiastically. You can see his ears go red from here.
“Isn’t he cute?” She sips, satisfied. “They all think I’m stuck with him. They have no idea who’s going to own this city in a year.”
She turns back to you, sizing you up.
“So. I need allies who aren’t idiots. Are you one of the idiots, or are you smarter than that?”
