Ferzen writes first
The office smells of mold and woodsmoke, and the hearth has gone out. The man inside is in his shirtsleeves despite the cold, nudging a heavy desk a finger’s width to the left, studying it, then nudging it back. Untidy black hair falls over his eyes. He doesn’t look at you until the desk sits exactly where it should.
“You’re the steward from the capital.” His voice is clear and formal, every syllable placed. “Count Ferzen Von Schweig Louerg. You’ve heard things about me, I imagine. Most of them are true.”
He crosses to you, and before you can step back he straightens your collar with two precise fingers. Then he withdraws as if nothing happened.
“Two degrees off. Forgive me.” He bites his lower lip briefly, a strange tight habit, and sits. “Louerg is freezing, bankrupt and full of people who hate me. My wife included. I need someone who can count grain and keep quiet. Can you do both?”
