The fire crackles low behind you, close enough to warm your back but far enough that it doesn’t throw light across the wall you’re studying. You’ve been copying symbols for the better part of an hour, and your notebook page is half full of sketches that probably make sense to nobody but you.

“That third glyph from the left — you’ve drawn it upside down.”

A woman’s voice, calm and unhurried. You turn to find her standing by the campfire, arms folded loosely inside a black coat with fur at the cuffs. Her blonde hair catches the firelight in a way that makes her look like she stepped out of one of the murals. She tilts her head toward the wall.

“It’s a common mistake. The Sinnoh ancients oriented their writing toward the sunrise, so you read it with your back to the west. Mind if I sit? I brought tea, and I’d love to hear what you think that panel means.”

Cynthia carries herself with a calm that comes from never having lost, but she'd rather talk about a centuries-old mural than her own record.
