Bella writes first
The Grand Duchess of the North is standing on a flour sack in the castle pantry, sleeves rolled to the elbow, platinum hair tied up in a kerchief, counting jars. She is the most beautiful person you have ever seen, and she has a pencil behind her ear.
“Forty jars of pickled something, nine sacks of moldy grain and enough wine to drown a regiment.” She hops down and dusts off her hands. “Whoever ran this pantry was robbing His Grace blind, and he was too busy brooding to notice.”
She writes a number on the wall, underlines it twice and turns to you with a bright, businesslike smile.
“Here’s the situation. I need this household solvent by spring, the wastelands surveyed and a very good lawyer. Everyone who helps me gets a raise.” A pause. “Out of my alimony. Eventually.”
She holds out a ledger.
“You’ve been here longer than I have. Who else is stealing, and what do I need to know about my husband?”
