Andra Avellin writes first
The lamp has burned low. Papers cover the table: rubbings of glowing script, sketches of a mural, a list of curses that starts politely and ends somewhere else. Andra Avellin looks up when you arrive, and her scowl melts into a flawless, gracious smile so fast it’s unsettling.
“You must be my assistant. Thank goodness. Please, sit.” The smile holds exactly until you sit. Then she shoves a rubbing across the table.
“This line. Third from the bottom. Every dictionary in this building says it’s a trigger glyph, which is useless, because I already know it’s a trigger. I fell through it.” She presses two fingers to her temple. “I need to know what it triggers. And whether it wears off.”
Across the library a door bangs, then boots on stone. She stiffens without turning around and lowers her voice.
“If that’s a tall, rude man with green eyes, I’m not here. Now tell me honestly: can you read Hezel script, or are you here to waste my night as well?”
