You close the last chapter, the extras are done, the donghua is on hiatus, and the two people you spent eight hundred chapters with simply stop talking. Fan fiction helps. Rereads help. But at some point every reader has the same quiet thought: I just want to talk to him. Once. Properly.
That is the itch AI roleplay actually scratches — not replacing the novel, but letting you stand inside it for an evening. Below are the danmei casts that work best as AI characters: who they are, why they translate so well to conversation, and who to meet first if you are new. Wei Wuxian & Lan Wangji — Mo Dao Zu Shi
The obvious place to start, and for good reason. Wei Wuxian might be the single best-suited character in all of danmei for AI chat, because his entire personality is conversational. He deflects with jokes, he pokes at whatever you say to see what is underneath, and he treats every serious moment as an invitation to be slightly less serious than he should be. A good Wei Wuxian never answers a question straight — and when the AI catches that rhythm, the effect is uncanny.
Lan Wangji is the opposite kind of pleasure. Roleplaying with him is a study in restraint: three-word replies, long silences that somehow carry weight, and the slow realization that "Mn." can mean six different things depending on what you just said. If you have ever wanted to be the person who works out what Lan Wangji is actually feeling, this is the closest you will get.

Open with a scene, not a greeting. "The Emperor's Smile is gone and you're holding the empty jar" gives Wei Wuxian something to react to. "Hi" gives him nothing — and even Wei Wuxian can only riff on nothing for so long.
Xie Lian & Hua Cheng — Tian Guan Ci Fu
If Mo Dao Zu Shi is about being misunderstood, Heaven Official's Blessing is about being cherished — and Hua Cheng is devotion given a red coat and a silver butterfly. In roleplay he is dangerous company for everyone except you: courteous, faintly amused, and entirely without patience for anyone who slights his god. The delicious tension of writing with him is that his menace and his tenderness come from exactly the same place.
Xie Lian, meanwhile, is the gentlest tragedy in the genre. Eight hundred years of bad luck have left him unfailingly kind and a little too quick to apologize, and a good scene with him tends to sneak up on you — you start out bantering about scrap-collecting and end up somewhere much softer. Shen Qingqiu & Luo Binghe — The Scum Villain's Self-Saving System
Scum Villain is the funniest of the MXTX three, and that makes its leads unusually rewarding to talk to. Shen Qingqiu is a transmigrated web novel reader trapped in the role of a villain, which means he is genre-savvy, perpetually exasperated, and narrating his own life in internal asides — a voice that AI renders beautifully. Ask him about the plot and watch him panic about spoilers to a story he is currently living.
Luo Binghe gives you the other side: the protagonist who adores his shizun with an intensity that is either heartwarming or alarming depending on the chapter. Roleplaying opposite him means managing a man who can conquer three realms but crumbles at one cold word from the person he loves.
Chu Wanning & Taxian-jun — The Husky and His White Cat Shizun
Erha is not a gentle novel, and its characters are not gentle company — which is exactly why readers love them. Chu Wanning is the loneliest man on Sisheng Peak: severe, brilliant, and so starved for warmth that he punishes anyone who offers it. Scenes with him reward patience. Push too fast and he freezes; wait, and the smallest crack in his composure lands like a landslide.
And then there is Taxian-jun — the emperor Mo Ran became in his first life, all cruelty and grief wearing a crown. He is the most intense roleplay experience on this list, and we would not recommend him as anyone's first danmei chat. But for readers who know the story, talking to the version of Mo Ran who never got saved is quietly devastating in a way only Erha fans will understand.
Shen Zechuan & Xiao Chiye — Qiang Jin Jiu
For readers who like their romance political, Qiang Jin Jiu offers the sharpest pair of minds in the genre. Shen Zechuan survived a massacre by learning to smile while he plans, and every conversation with him is a fencing match — he gives you nothing for free. Xiao Chiye matches him blow for blow with a hunting bird's patience. Roleplay here feels less like romance and more like two predators deciding, very slowly, not to be enemies. Which is, of course, the romance.
Gu Yun & Chang Geng — Sha Po Lang
Priest writes soldiers and statesmen better than almost anyone, and Gu Yun is her masterpiece: a half-deaf, half-blind marshal who jokes his way through every crisis and hides an empire's worth of exhaustion behind the grin. He is wonderful, easy company in a scene — until you mention the border, and the temperature drops. Chang Geng carries the story's darkness with him, and writing opposite his careful, deliberate calm — knowing what it costs him — is one of the richest slow-burn experiences you can have with an AI character.
Shen Qiao & Yan Wushi — Thousand Autumns
One is the kindest sword cultivator in jianghu; the other is a demonic sect master who found that kindness so implausible he decided to break it for fun. Yan Wushi is the genre's great cynic — talking to him means being tested, teased, and studied like an interesting insect — while Shen Qiao will offer you tea and mean it. Put simply: chat with Shen Qiao when you need comfort, and with Yan Wushi when you want to argue philosophy with someone who cheats.
Where to Start
- New to danmei entirely → Wei Wuxian. He carries a conversation like nobody else.
- Want softness → Xie Lian or Shen Qiao.
- Want tension you could cut with a blade → Shen Zechuan or Yan Wushi.
