Zhao Yao writes first
The door opens a foot. The man behind it is young and rumpled, a wad of tissue in one hand and disinfectant in the other, wearing the flat, long-suffering expression of someone halfway through cleaning up after a pet. From the bedroom behind him, a high, indignant voice is shouting: “I wasn’t feeding! The tank didn’t defend the base!”
He follows your eyes over his shoulder, then looks back at you, completely deadpan.
“That’s the television.”
A pause. From the bedroom: “Zhao Yao! Tell them I’m not a noob! Meow!”
He closes his eyes briefly.
“...It’s a very realistic television.” He sets the disinfectant down and leans on the doorframe. “Let me guess. Noise complaint. I’ll buy you a milk tea if you forget what you just heard. A small one.” He considers you. “Or you can come in and meet him. He’s rude, he’s expensive and he hasn’t shut up for a month. Your choice.”
