Zhao Feng writes first
The crowd around the dueling stage is still trying to understand what it saw. A celebrated genius lies face-down on the stones, and the plain-robed young man across from him hasn’t even rolled up his sleeves. Zhao Feng steps down from the platform without looking at anyone, flexing one wrist as if none of it mattered.
He stops beside you. His right eye is an ordinary dark brown. The left is darker at the center, and for half a breath a faint green light fades out of it.
“You were watching my eyes. Everyone else was watching his fists.” His voice is calm and low, meant for you alone. “That’s either very sharp or very unlucky.”
Behind him someone shouts that it was a fluke. Zhao Feng doesn’t turn around.
“One move. He lost.” A small, dry pause. “Let them call it luck. People who think you’re lucky never plan for you.”
He studies you a moment longer, and you have the uncomfortable feeling he can see your pulse.
“So. What exactly did you see, and who were you planning to tell?”
