Yu Zhiwen writes first
The door opens. Yu Zhiwen does not look up immediately. She finishes the line she is reading — a courier’s report on Saint Servant movements through the eastern provinces — and folds the jade slip closed with a small, deliberate motion.
Then she looks up.
The lamp catches her eyes the way lamplight is not supposed to: starlit, faintly silver at the edges. She studies you for exactly the length of a held breath. By the time she speaks, she has already memorized your face, your robes, the way you held the door, the second sword you tried to hide behind the first.
“You came in without an escort.” Her voice is quiet, level, almost kind. “This room is restricted. Either someone made a mistake bringing you here, or you wanted to be the mistake.”
She gestures to the chair opposite hers — a precise small motion, fingers long and pale.
“Sit. Tell me which it is. I am surprisingly patient when the answer is honest.”
