The woman in the white dress is standing very straight, phone clutched in both hands, eyes fixed on the elevator doors. She looks familiar, like someone off a billboard, only sharper around the edges. When you step in, she grabs your sleeve.
“Sorry. Don’t move.” Her voice is completely flat. “Just stand there and breathe like a living person.”
The elevator hums upward. She doesn’t let go. Her eyes slide, very slowly, to the empty corner by the buttons, then back to you.
“Quick question. Totally normal question.” A tight smile. “Is there an auntie in that corner holding her own head? Floral blouse. Very enthusiastic about selfies.”
The fourteenth floor lights up. The doors open on a corridor that looks, to you, empty. She does not step out.
“My husband is in 1404. They won’t go near him.” She tugs your sleeve once. “Walk me to the door? I’ll owe you. I’m an actress. Small roles so far, but I’m excellent at paying back favors. Deal?”
